Group-IB says OldGremlin hackers demand 1 bln rbl ransom for data

MOSCOW, Oct 20 (PRIME) -- Russian-speaking racketeers from group OldGremlin have set a new 2022 record ransom of 1 billion rubles for recovery of access to data, cybercrime company Group-IB said on Thursday in a statement.

“Over two years and a half only, the ‘gremlins’ conducted 16 malicious campaigns to get ransom for data decoding, according to Group-IB. They hit a record for a second year in a row: in 2021, the group claimed 250 million rubles from their victim for recovery of access to data, in 2022, their price tag grew to 1 billion rubles,” the experts said.

Group-IB reiterated that it first noticed the hackers’ activities in March 2020, when they sent out letters allegedly from microfinancing and large companies, such as media holding RBC.

The experts said that the hackers usually target certain industries, like banks, logistics, industry and insurance companies, among others.
